Listen up kids going into grades 7 through 12. The city of St. Petersburg has a party planned just for you. So, don your swimsuit, grab a towel, and get ready for some extreme fun in the sun on the white sand beach in Treasure Island.
The event is called the TASCO Summer Extreme Beach Bash 2010 and is open to teens and preteens from all over the bay area.
There will be more than 15 activities ranging from a 30-foot slip-and-slide to two 20-foot water slides, a rock wall, a skim-board contest and a four-on-four volleyball tournament.
"I do not know of anywhere else a teenager can go on the beach with over 1,000 of their peers and have fun in the sun for free," said Shawn Drouin, special event supervisor.
The bash will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at T.I. Municipal Beach in Treasure Island, where teens can also get creatively wild in the sand castle contest, draw on the graffiti wall, battle in the joust pit, play flag football or cool off in the gulf.
For those who just want to kick back and enjoy the view, live entertainment will be provided by a DJ and teen performers from local recreation centers.
"There is so much to do that the teens may not get all the activities done in the six-hour time period," said Drouin.
The event, in its 14th year, is sponsored by the city of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department and the Breakfast Optimist Club. More than 45 city employees will supervise the festivities.
Teens are welcome to bring a brown-bag lunch or hit the concession stands for eats that range from 50 cents to $1.50 and include water, Gatorade, soft drinks, hotdogs, hamburgers and chips. And, don't forget a towel, sunglasses, sunscreen and a pair of tennis shoes to climb the rock wall.
TASCO (Teen Arts, Sports & Cultural Opportunities) is a city program that reached more 80,000 youths last year through about 100-plus community events, with several more on the horizon this summer.
