McMurray turned a lap of 183.542 mph followed by fellow Chevrolet drivers Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart. Greg Biffle qualified fourth in a Ford.

Johnson planned to fly home to Charlotte, N.C., after qualifying to spend the night with his family, then return for tonight's race. Johnson's wife, Chandra, gave birth to a daughter Wednesday. The couple has not picked a name.
