MAN IS STABBED TO DEATH IN YBOR

Many looked on outside the yellow police tape blocking a rooming house northeast of Ybor City Saturday night.

Some in the crowd of dozens knew Jamar V. Edwards, 22, whom Tampa police found stabbed to death in a back bedroom at 2710 E Columbus Drive. He had been visiting his mother's rental property, police said.

Those who knew Edwards described him as funny. He loved rap and gospel music, motorcycles and his family. Some of them waited with the crowd Saturday night.

Police got a 911 call about a stabbing at the rooming house at 7:06 p.m., Lt. Craig Sawicki said.

When they arrived, they found Edwards with stab wounds to his torso area, Sawicki said.

Tampa Fire Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene.

Residents and neighbors were questioned about the crime, but no arrests had been made.

Yulita Howard, 22, said her cousin, Edwards, used to crash at his mother's rooming house if he couldn't make it home after a night out.

"Whatever he thought about he said," Howard said. "He was really funny."

Edwards was serving one year of probation for misdemeanor reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest without violence. He'd been arrested several times since 1997.

Edwards has six siblings, said Ebou Howard, 30, who is also Edwards' cousin.

"I'm just appalled that someone would do something like this to him," the Potter Elementary School teacher said. "He was very respectful."

Times researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report.
