ADAMS, Frank Roland Jr. 90, of St. Petersburg, passed away July 3, 2010 and is at home with his Lord & Savior. Frank was born in Pensacola, to Frank R. Adams Sr. and Helen F. Adams. He was one of four brothers, attended schools in St. Petersburg, graduating from St. Petersburg High School, and attended St. Petersburg Junior College before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet in 1942. He separated from active service in 1946 with the rank of First Lt., last serving as a field staff pilot. Following the service, he worked as a regional sales representataive and as a small business owner before returning to St. Petersburg to establish a real estate brokerage agency, as well as, a group benefits insurance consulting agency. Upon retirement, Frank enjoyed his family, making friends with everyone he met, extended cross country RV adventures, golf and tennis. He was a long term member of the First Presbyterian Church, having served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee and with many church committees. Frank is survived by his wife Tricia Adams; daughters, Ruth Anne Niles (Jerry) & Fran Stumpff (Ed); son Frank Adams III (Alice); eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren & Ella expected in October. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Bill, Charles and Dick; and his first wife Mary Alice Adams. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2:30pm, at the First Presbyterian Church. CRANDALL, Mary B. of Brighton Gardens in Tampa, died peacefully at home after a long illness on July 8, 2010. She was a former resident of Naples and Marco Island, where she had lived with her husband, Charles T. Crandall, for 61 years until his death in 2004. She graduated with a degree in nursing after having attended both Florida State College for Women and Mercy School of Nursing in Pittsburg, PA. She was a practicing Catholic, an avid reader, loved to garden and entertain, and was always the first one to lend a helping hand. She was involved in charitable work when she was younger and was a member of the Rochester Junior League. While living at Brighton Gardens she loved to help arrange the flowers and play bingo. Mary was the proud mother of three children, Dr. Wilson Crandall of Heathrow, FL, Walter Crandall of Vancouver, WA, and Lisa Crandall of Tampa. She had two daughtes-in-law, Kathryn Crandall and Beth Crandall; and son-in-law Thomas M. O'Neil. She will be missed by her seven grandchildren, Jennifer Mullins, Jessica and Andrew Stemler, Trafton and Victoria Crandall. Brett Krimpmann, and Vanessa Wade. She also had two "surrogate" daughters who took loving care of her at Brighton Gardens for the last few years, Donnette Mintzer and Maria Guzman. Mary moved to Tampa to be close to her daughter Lisa and her family, and for the last six years had been a very important part of their family. She will be FOREVER missed and LOVED. DiBETTA, Joe 81, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Joe was retired from the Florida Department of Agriculture, as a state meat inspector. He was born in Ybor City, and was a lifelong resident of Tampa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia Suarez Di Betta, and his oldest son, Joe Di Betta II. Joe missed Alicia horribly for the past 27 months, as they were soulmates since their teenage years in Ybor City, and later finding each other again later in life, being married for 48 years. They lived for each other and their family everyday. They were inseparable here on earth, and are now reunited and dancing in heaven. Joe and Alice were special people who helped anyone who needed anything or asked, be they strangers or friends. They instilled that and so much more to their children and grandchildren, by example and teachings. He is survived by his sons, Adolfo (Al) Luis-Suarez and Carl David Luis. DRESSEL, Carol A. moved to Florida in 1981 -1982 from her home state of Michigan. At Michigan State University she had earned Bachelor of Science degrees in biology and psychology and a Master of Science degree in Educational Research. Carol spent much of her career working in service to the elderly. She joined Neighbor Senior Services in 1982 and worked with many programs and clients within that area. Her passion was reading and rarely could she be found without a book. She also had a love of music and differing cultures. In 2009 she moved to California to be closer to family and died there on July 5th with her two sisters, Linda and Jeana Dressel by her side. ENGELENBERG, Lema (Hawkins) passed away peacefully June 4th. She was preceded by her beloved husband Henry "Junior" Engelenberg and her siblings Evelyn, Sarah and Wesley. JOHNSON, Harvey Ray Former Medway, MA resident, 63, died July 4, 2010 in Tampa after a long and courageous battle with juvenile diabetes. Harv was the beloved son of the late Ray and Bernadine Johnson of Florida and is survived by his two sons, David Harvey of Florida and Robert Warren of Medway. He is also survived by his brother, Stephen Johnson of Florida along with nieces, nephews, their children and many cousins. Harv was a "Gator" and received both his undergraduate and Masters degrees from the University of Florida. He went on to an award-winning career in copywriting and journalism working in the newspaper, advertising agency and corporate worlds. Harv founded and ran Harv Johnson & Associates in Boston for many years before retiring to Florida. Harv served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant. Harv will be remembered for his sharp wit and optimistic outlook on life. If there was a body of water anywhere in sight, Harv would have his fishing pole ready to cast. Although ill for many years, there was rarely a day that he spoke of the struggles of living with his illness. A celebration of Harv's life will be held in Medway at a later date. LOW, Mark Allen 43, died June 30, 2010 in Hospice care after suffering 3.5 years from brain tumors. A 1984 Countryside High School graduate, he worked several years in Las Vegas on construction of many of the newer casinos and the Hoover Dam. He started college at the Univ. of Las Vegas and graduated in 2002 from Univ. of South Florida. In 2006 he graduated from medical school at the American University of the Carribean in St. Maartens. MARVIN, Caroline Jordon died July 1, 2010. Caroline was an animal lover and is survived by her two perfect cats, Versace and Monet. She loved exercise and being strong and healthy. She was a long distance runner for the past 18 years. The diagnosis of small cell lung cancer is something that she found almost impossible to believe. She wanted everyone, especially young women, to know that even a short period of smoking can have a catastrophic effect on your life. OLSEN, June Marie 87, passed away Wednesday, July 7th, 2010. The only child of Thomas & Marie Mathisen was born June 24th, 1923. Survived by devoted & loving husband Robert of 63 years; children William (Joan) Olsen and Karen (Charles) Hennessey; and grandchildren Ryan, Gregory, & Kevin Olsen & Matthew & Laurie Hennessey. Preceded in death by her youngest son James Alan in 1995. Bob & June met when she was 11 & he was 12. They joined in marriage after WWII by the renowned Dr. Joshua Oden at Irving Park Lutheran Church in Chicago. June was a very beautiful woman both inside & outside and was a shining example of one of the finest persons a society can produce. PANNIER, Fredrick Paul was born Aug. 24, 1951 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He spent his formative years in his much loved Buenos Aires, Argentina. During these years, the family periodically travelled to the States to visit grandparents, aunts and uncles on propeller planes, on the first jets, and on several ocean liners, before permanently relocating to the States with his family when he was 17 years old. He served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era in Fort Walton Beach, and in Thailand. Later, Fred studied photography at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA, and moved to New York City upon graduation. He was self-employed and was fullfilled by his 20 year career in audio visual multimedia presentations for fortune 500 companies. His profession took him to resorts all over the world. Brazil, Argentina, Thialand, Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, Canada, England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and Russia were among the places Fred visited. He was a member of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) and worked on a Broadway production. Fred is survived by his father, Frank Joseph; his mother, Madlyn "Kiki" nee Menendez; his siblings, Ginny, Alice, Brian, and Jon; and by his beloved son, William Forest Pannier who gave him his greatest sense of pride and joy. He was preceeded in death by his eldest brother, Frank Mario. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. PHILLIPS, Steven Ray 59, of Tampa, passed away unexpectedly on July 7, 2010. Steve was born in Merritt Island, and moved with his parents to Tampa as an infant. Steve loved cars, and he worked in the automotive business in a variety of capacities, such as auto mechanic, service manager, parts manager, and inventory control manager for several automotive warehouses. Steve's hobbies included fishing, hot rods, motorcycles, gardening, and computer games. Steve loved animals, Clint Eastwood movies, and music, such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and the Eagles. SETTLE, Ralph Oglesby Jr. 88, of Pinellas Park, passed away at home under Hospice Care on July 7, 2010. He was born in Atlanta, GA on Jan. 6, 1922, and moved to St. Petersburg in 1931. After graduating from St. Petersburg High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. During his service from July 1940 to November 1960 he served 8 years in the U.S. Navy and 12 years in the U.S. Air Force where he served the Pacific Theatre as Combat Corpsman, 1st Mark Raiders and was involved with the Guadalcanal Invasion on Aug. 7, 1942. Later served on the USS Eider and USS Frontier. In the USAF, was in charge of the pharmacy at MacDill Air Force Base Hospital and was promoted to Warrant Officer in 1949. Went on to serve at St. Johns, Newfoundland, Pepperill Air Force Base Hospital as Registrar, then returned to MacDill serving as Registrar until 1960 when he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. During his service, he received the Presidential Unit Citation Guadalcanal First Marine Division; American Defense Service Medal; Army of the Pacific Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Award; Purple Heart; and the Air Force Commendation Medal. After his military service he continued to serve in Hospital Administration as CEO at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Dade City, Keys Community Hospital in the Florida Keys, St. Petersburg General Hospital, and Polk General Hospital in Bartow, FL. In retirement, he spent many years motor-homing with his wife, and best friend, Mary Jane McFarland Settle (deceased) and enjoyed the company of his many lifelong friends. He was the dedicated father to his daughters Cindy Ripley of St. Petersburg, Mary Settle of Clearwater, Ralphine Knight of Pinellas Park, and Pamella Settlegoode of St. Petersburg, two stepsons, Thomas L. Barnhart of Tallahassee, R. Bruce Barnhart III of Fayetteville, NC, a stepdaughter, Suzanne Barnhart (deceased) of San Diego, CA; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. SEVIER, Thomas Louis 59, of New Port Richey, lost his valiant battle with cancer on July 3, 2010. Born and raised in Passaic, NJ, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a medic/dental tech. Afterward, he worked in retail sales where he excelled in managerial positions in NJ and in his adopted state, FL. Tom charmed all those he met with his magnetic personality, quick wit, and his ability to turn even mundane events into humorous stories. His gifts for comedy and storytelling were matched only by his warmth and generosity. SPAHR, Mary Beth 83, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on July 7th at Suncoast Hospice Brookside in Palm Harbor. Originally from Great Barrington, MA, she was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. She and her husband, Kimball moved with their children to Tarpon Springs in the 1960's. In her final years she was a resident of HarborChase in Palm Harbor. Mary Beth possessed a razor sharp wit and enjoyed living life on her own terms. She was well versed in Scripture and was active in the Suncoast Bible Study. Mary Beth took great joy in her family and was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. SUDIK, Walter S. Jan. 1, 1917-July 2, 2010 93, of Gulfport and formerly of Norwich, CT died on Friday, July 2. Walter was born in Norwich on Jan. 1, 1917 the son of Frances and Felix F. Sudik Sr. His parents had emigrated from Poland to seek a better life in the United States. They raised six children. Walter attended St. Joseph's Parochial School (31) and the Willimantic State Trade School (34) and became a carpenter for the John D. McWilliams Company of Norwich. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1945 and was stationed in Panama, Belize, and Curacao. He was married to Hazel Mae Senior in 1950. He resided in Florida and worked for the City of Gulfport until his retirement. Walter was predeceased by his wife Hazel in 1993, two brothers, Joseph S. and Felix (Hibby) F., and a sister, Sophie Cimikowski. Walter is survived by a brother Edward J. of San Diego, CA and a sister Edith Mulally of Norwich along with several nieces and nephews, numerous friends, especially Faye, his best friend who was a very special part of his life. Walter was a friend to everyone. Without exception he held a conversation with everyone he ever met. WHALLEN, Horace Edward 87, of Dunedin, passed away on July 6, 2010. He was born in Richardsville, KY, raised in Louisville and served our country during WWII in Pearl Harbor with the Navy as an electronics specialist and post-war in the Army Signal Corps. He and wife of 56 years, Gloria, raised their children in Lexington, KY, Cincinnati and Dunedin while working in the electronics and computer technology field for IBM and MAI/ Sorbus for over 40 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of several civic organizations including the Elks Club, Suncoast Pilots Association, 25 year member of the Loyal Order of the Moose having serving as Governor in 1990 and 1995 and lastly, the Masons, Scottish Rite and Egypt Shrine of Tampa participating in their Tin Lizzy parade unit. He is predeceased by first-born daughter Diane (1951), and wife Gloria (2001). Survivors include sons, Steven Whallen (Mary Ann), Donald Whallen (Petrina); daughter Janice Douglass (Jamie); grandsons Kevin, Ryan, Derek Whallen and Scott Douglass (Heather); great-grandson Rogan Douglass; and dear friend Darlene Bentley.
