La Catrina Quartet focused on Mexican classical music in its performance Sunday afternoon at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. The quartet - Daniel Vega-Albela, first violin; Blake Espy, second violin; Jorge A. Martinez, viola; and Philip von Maltzahn, cello - played works by Mexican composers Emmanuel Arias y Luna, Eduardo Gamboa, Javier Alvarez and Jose Pablo Moncayo, as well as Argentinian Alberto Ginastera's String Quartet No. 1. A Haydn quartet was the non-Latino outlier on the program. Times performing arts critic John Fleming reviews the concert on Critics Circle at blogs.tampabay.com/arts.
