- The Netherlands is the first nation to lose three finals without winning one. Hungary (1938, '54) and Czechoslovakia (1934, '62) have lost twice.

- This was the fifth World Cup in a row to see a drop in scoring. The 2.27 goal average was second lowest, ahead of only the 1990 tournament (2.21).

- The Netherlands became the first nation to lose the final after winning all of its previous tournament games since Hungary in 1954.
