A handgun stolen two years ago from a truck used by the chief prosecutor in Hernando County was recovered Saturday after deputies accused a 23-year-old man of brandishing the weapon during an argument. Assistant State Attorney Donald Barbee reported the .40-caliber pistol missing in April 2008, telling the Sheriff's Office that the weapon was taken from his 2003 Silverado parked in the driveway of his home. There was no forced entry into the vehicle, and Barbee said the truck was most likely unlocked. Deputies recovered the pistol around noon Saturday while responding to a "weapons disturbance" at a home in the 1100 block of Desmond Avenue in Spring Hill. According to the arrest report, Michael Waddy was seen waving the gun in the air during an argument with a woman at the home. The woman, who was watching the house for the homeowner, told deputies Waddy walked in and began yelling for the homeowner. He later went outside and was waving the gun in the air. Authorities arrested Waddy and Gerardo Cruz, who drove to the home with Waddy. During a search of Cruz's car, they found the handgun, a tin with a green leafy substance in a plastic bag and a digital scale with residue. Deputies also recovered a bag of marijuana. Cruz was cited for marijuana possession. Waddy faces charges of possession of firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and grand theft. He was transported to the Hernando County jail and was held without bond.

Inmate injured by leap inside jail
An inmate at the Hernando County Jail was seriously injured Monday morning after he jumped from the second floor of his cell unit, according to interim warden Orlando Rodriguez. Allen Scott Story, 54, broke both of his arms, a wrist and possibly his hip in the fall. He also suffered a concussion, but had no other serious injuries. Story went into surgery Monday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg and was in stable condition, Rodriguez said. A spokeswoman with the Sheriff's Office said it was an ongoing investigation and declined to comment. Rodriguez said Story, who was housed in the jail's mental health dormitory, was seen leaping from the second tier around 8 a.m. "The inmate just ran and leapt into the railing and fell down," he said. "It looked like he was taking a dive." Story was arrested Nov. 2 on charges of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.
