Back on his old stomping grounds at Tampa Prep on Thursday evening, former Terrapins coach and current Bishop McLaughlin coach Nick Rodriguez let the Hurricanes' second straight Class 2A, District 10 title sink in.
Bishop McLaughlin fell behind 2-0 to Brooks-DeBartolo in the first inning, but as has been the case this month, rallied to knock off the Phoenix 11-4.
"To hold (Brooks-DeBartolo) to six hits is simply outstanding," Rodriguez said.
"Dre Leal has stepped up throughout this entire year and Tyler Cooler is the best shortstop in the county and continues to show it on and off the field. Just all the way around we played well tonight."
Bishop McLaughlin starter Leal (eight strikeouts) had a rocky start, hitting a batter and allowing two runs in the first frame. But Bishop (20-7) opened the floodgates in the next two innings, compiling eight hits and nine runs for a 9-3 lead. The 'Canes received a big game from Cooler, who went 4-for-5 with two triples and two runs scored.
From there, the Phoenix (11-14) put together just four hits and left four runners on base.
