We weren't aware that Florida didn't have an official state amphibian (the Gainesville.com story, which says the post is "currently vacant," makes it sound like the old officeholder abdicated so someone younger could take the title). Or that Florida needed one.
But Sen. Steve Oelrich, R-Alachua, thinks it does, and he got unanimous state Senate approval to give the barking treefrog, an unusually large frog, that designation.
Nobody said what would occur if the new title holder croaked while in office.
