Charter school expansion bill headed to Gov. Scott

From our friends at the Buzz comes word that the House of Representatives, like the Senate, has approved a bill to expand charter schools in Florida. That means it's off to Gov. Rick Scott for what is expected to be a quick and enthusiastic signature.

But the House vote, 87 to 27, shows there isn't universal enthusiasm for the measure, which would allow "high performing" charter companies to open up outlets in new counties over district objections.

Rep. Joe Gibbons, D-Hallandale Beach, said he does not support giving charter schools so many benefits that "we make them unconstitutional." And it remains to be seen whether the bills will, in fact, pass constitutional muster if they're challenged in court.
