DOWNTOWN'S SAVANNAH'S CAFE TO CLOSE MAY 28

ST. PETERSBURG

Savannah's Cafe will close at the end of the month, according to a statement by owner John Warren. The Southern cuisine restaurant at 1113 Central Ave., known for its mint juleps in mason jars and shrimp and grits, became a distinct player in the local scene when it opened nearly four years ago. "Despite accomplishments, these are trying economic times and Savannah's Cafe must close - for now," Warren said in the statement. Warren, a businessman with a background in historic preservation, made a surprising late run in the 2009 St. Petersburg mayoral race. He received a small percentage of votes. Savannah's Cafe has reduced its hours to Wednesdays through Sundays until it closes May 28.
