In Florida, Republican lawmakers proclaimed their dedication to public education even as they rushed to slash per-student funding to its lowest level in years.
Michigan it's not.
The AP reports that Michigan Republican lawmakers who have backed cutting spending in nearly every other area have balked against Gov. Rick Snyder's efforts to reduce funding for schools.
"Lawmakers are softening the cuts after hundreds of their local school districts have warned they're running low on savings and can't absorb them. Some Republican lawmakers are flat-out refusing to vote for them. ...
" 'People are passionate about their kids, their students,' said Republican House Speaker Jase Bolger after a key vote. "That's why none of this is easy.' "
