Clearwater Central Catholic hired James Margarella as its boys basketball coach, athletic director Keith Galley said. Margarella replaces Rick Coia, who left to coach at Oldsmar Christian.

Margarella coached Tarpon Springs' boys basketball team the past four seasons and led the Spongers to a 19-10 finish and runnerup spot in the Class 5A, District 11 tournament. Tarpon Springs lost in the first round to eventual state finalist Gibbs. It was the first time the Spongers had made the postseason since 1999. CCC went 8-17 this past season, losing to Berkeley Prep 66-37 in the 3A-10 district semifinals.

"We believe (Margarella) has the experience and ability to continue building our program so that we can be competitive with any school we play," Galley said.

Dunedin names coach

Dunedin hired Jason Franzen as its boys basketball coach. Franzen, an assistant at Countryside, replaces John Johnson, who coached the past two seasons before stepping down.

Franzen has a tough job. The Falcons went 0-22 last season and have not made the playoffs since 2002. The last time Dunedin won a playoff game was 1967.
