'AMAZING RACE' ALUM OPENING FITNESS CENTER

It usually takes a lot of money to open a new business. Some people get loans from banks, others borrow from friends and family, and others seek out investors.

Brian Kleinschmidt went a nontraditional route. He got the money to open his gym by finishing third in season 15 of The Amazing Race.

His Anytime Fitness franchise, at 10875 Bloomingdale Ave., across from Winthrop Town Centre, is set to welcome its first members in early August.

Anytime Fitness has locations all around the world, but this will be the first in Riverview.

The concept behind Anytime Fitness is to make the latest and best fitness technology and expertise available to everyone. The facilities are designed for everyone from couch potatoes who want to start an exercise program to fitness buffs who want a more convenient place to work out.

All Anytime locations are open 24 hours a day, and all members have full access to any location anywhere in the world. Personal trainers are on hand for guidance with exercise and help with machines. Classes in everything from yoga to hip-hop are available at no extra charge. The gyms also offer private showers, and many machines are fitted with video monitors. Tanning is also available.

Even though the Riverview location is a spacious 6,300 square feet, Kleinschmidt said he anticipates having about 1,000 members, which is fewer than many other fitness facilities have.

"You won't have to fight for a machine," Kleinschmidt said.

Best of all, he said, membership is affordable for most people.

"The best way to think of it is it's about a dollar a day," he said. "If you get a one-month membership it's a little more. And if you get a six-month membership it's less, and a year membership is even less than that."

Spa and boutique opens in Riverview

RIVERVIEW - If you can't come to Kurvaceous Diva Boutique and Spa, the spa will come to you.

Since the Riverview spa opened three months ago, a large part of its business has come through spa parties, in which employees visit groups of women at homes or other locations and offer services from facials and massages to waxing and permanent makeup.

But more and more people are coming into the spa and boutique, which offers women's shoes and accessories, along with plus-size clothing for "curvy" women, owner Latoya Thomas said. The staff at Kurvaceous Diva aims to pamper customers.

"From the moment you walk in the door, we make you feel like a diva," Thomas said. "We offer you Starbucks coffee, whether you buy anything or not. Every customer is special, even every potential customer."

Kurvaecous Diva Boutique and Spa is at 7441 U.S. 301. It's open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call (813) 677-8942 or visit kurvaceousdiva.com.
