NEW MOVIES THIS WEEK

Everything Must Go

The gist: Despite trailers that seem to suggest the contrary, this is a completely serious role for Will Ferrell, who has reached that stage in his life where he wants to be taken seriously. He plays an alcoholic hitting rock bottom when he loses his job and his wife kicks him out of the house. Hey, it worked for Tom Hanks. R

The cast: Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Glenn Howerton, Christopher Jordan Wallace and Laura Dern.

The buzz: This one is as good a straight role for Ferrell as Stranger Than Fiction (although that one was a little bit more offbeat). That's a good thing. "That lawn with its scraps of a ruined life is a setting both satirical and poignant, and Will Ferrell gives a performance of Chekhovian depth," New York magazine lauds.

Bridesmaids

The gist: Ladies, if you'd rather let the fellas go guffaw at The Hangover II, here's a version of practically the same story, but with women who remember what happens. Because women, they never forget. R

The cast: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper.

The buzz: Whoa, it's a good turn by a couple of Saturday Night Live vets - who are female, no less. "The movie is smart about a lot of things, including the vital importance of female friendships," the New York Times cheers. "And it's nice to see so many actresses taking up space while making fun of something besides other women."

Priest 3D

The gist: Obligatory crappy comic book movie that squeaks in between the mega-blockbuster comic book movies. This one is about a guy in an apocalyptic future world in which men have been fighting vampires for centuries. It sucks, all right. PG-13

The cast: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Stephen Moyer, Lily Collins and Karl Urban.

The buzz: It could be worse, but that's not saying much in this genre. "Not exactly an unholy mess, but still a rather too pious retread of classic sci-fi/action/horror riffs that lacks originality or pizzazz," Variety reasons. And they're being nice.
