The Consumer Price Index increased 0.4 percent in April, the Labor Department said. In the past 12 months, prices have risen 3.2 percent, the biggest year-over-year gain since November 2007 through October 2008. Excluding volatile food and energy, which account for about 20 percent of the CPI, the "core" index increased 0.2 percent in April and has risen 1.3 percent over the past 12 months. That's still below the level the Federal Reserve considers a healthy pace of inflation.

The team behind AOL's AIM instant messenger has rolled out the first version of a free video chat service that doesn't require users to log in or download any software. Called AV, the service was created as a way to have quick, easy video chats, said Jason Shellen, a leader of the AIM team. Though there are plenty of other voice and video chat offerings available for computers and smart phones, AV is unlike many with its decision to eschew both log-ins and software downloads.

Yum Brands, operator of Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC, said Friday it is formally offering to buy most of the remaining shares it does not already own of Chinese hot pot chain Little Sheep. Restaurant growth overseas, particularly in China, has been a key driver for Yum's profit growth. The deal, between $580 million and $590 million, would increase Yum Brands' ownership of Little Sheep to 93.2 percent from 27.2 percent, with company founders owning the remaining 6.8 percent stake.
