UPDATE, 5:20: Asked by the New York about Sam Fuld, Maddon had a new line, comparing him to the former Angels and Cardinals spunky star by saying, "He's David Eckstein in leftfield.''
UPDATE, 4:33: The new plan is for Howell will pitch in Port Charlotte on Tuesday, then rejoin Rays on Friday vs. Marlins, 1 day later than planned due to the rain in Syracuse. Because the flights are delayed out of Syracuse, Howell is driving to New York City to fly out of JFK. ... Rays Maddon says "as of right now" Sonnanstine will make Friday start vs. Marlins. ... OF Sam Fuld is good to play after getting two stitches in his lip and losing part of a crown during a play in Sunday's game. Fuld, playing to the Legend story line, said the stitches were no problem: "I did it myself.''
DEVELOPING: he Rays have a late report time for today's game with the Yankees, who arrive in town looking a bit like the old Bronx Zoo days with a number of swirling issues involving Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, Rafael Soriano and Bartolo Colon.
The Rays will send LHP David Price to the mound to try to reverse their fortunes after two lackluster losses to the Orioles, and he will face Yankees RHP A.J. Burnett.
No word on the Rays lineup yet, but here is what the Yankees have planned, with Brett Gardner and Posada out of the lineup vs. the lefty Price, and with Alex Rodriguez at DH rather than third.
Two other notes of interest:
* Former Rays closer Rafael Soriano told New York media he won't be able to pitch during this series due to soreness in his elbow, which he planned to check today in a bullpen session.
* Rays LHP J.P. Howell was rained out of his scheduled final rehab appearance in Syracuse, N.Y., today and the team was deciding whether to try to get him to Port Charlotte to pitch, or to have him go back to Durham and throw Tuesday, and then to decide what impact it would have on his planned return to the Rays on Tuesday.
