Fox announces 2011-12 schedule, with a Bones spin off, new J.J. Abrams series and animated Napoleon Dynamite series

Here's how long some trends can take to come around in Hollywood.

ABC's Modern Family and The Middle proved about two years ago that good comedies can do more than win Emmy awards and launch movie careers -- they could also win over family audiences.

And in its new schedule announced for 2011-12, Fox executives plan on taking advantage of that trend -- in March, when they unveil a two-hour block of half-hour comedies.

"Comedy was really the core of every network's schedule...that's why every network is trying to get back to that," said Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment for Fox, in a conference call with reporters today.

"The genre may be ready to turn, if you pop in some good shows,"added Reilly, noting that comedy shows get higher viewership on repeat eisodes and do better in the syndicated market. "But comedy is fragile -- the best comedies have started at the bottom and been vulnerable....It could be a very healthy thing for television to get the genre moving again." (at right, new comedy I Hate My Teenage Daughter)

That's why Fox is kicking off its season with big guns, debuting Simon Cowell's new singing competition The X-Factor and a shiny new sci fi show from uber director Steven Spielberg, Terra Nova, in the fall.

In fact, the network's scheduling annoucement today had few surprises: As expected, The Chicago Code, Lie to Me, Human Target are history; Fringe, Raising Hope, House all survived. There's four comedies, three dramas and one new unscripted show on tap for next season.

New shows include a prison drama from Lost creator J.J. Abrams called Alcatraz (with Sam Neill and Lost alum Jorge Garcia) and a Bones spin off called The Finder. 24 star Kiefer Sutherland may return in midseason in Touch, as a dad who discovershis special needs son has special insights. And there's two new animated shows, including a cartoon version of Napoleon Dynamite.

Fox also managed to cancel America's Most Wanted without canceling it, slimming down the true crime series to four specials and slating reruns of weekday prime time shows the rest of the weeks at 9 p.m. Saturdays. "We have not made money on the show for quite a while," said Reilly, noting that host John Walsh is exploring other alternatives to keep new episodes of the series on the air.
