Pasco teachers, school related employees ratify contract

The United School Employees of Pasco has announced the passage of 2010-11 contracts for teachers and school-related employees.

Sixty one percent of 5,385 eligible employees voted. Of them, 83 percent of teachers and 84 percent of SRPs cast ballots in favor of the agreements, which go to the School Board on Tuesday.

The sides had reached an impasse in the fall, but came to a settlement instead of taking their issues to a special master. Employees will not get a raise for the third straight year under the agreement, which also includes an early retirement incentive and a deal to stave off a proposal to have secondary teachers instruct six periods daily.

"The results show acceptance of the settlement, but are not an endorsement," USEP president Lynne Webb said in a release. "Now it's time to start immediately negotiating the mess the Governor and Legislature dumped in our laps and remember that they are the ones shirking their responsibilities, not the Districts and unions!"
