Research In Motion has recalled about 1,000 of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet computers due to defective operating software that can make it impossible for users to set up the device. RIM said Monday that it learned that the affected tablets were shipped with software "that may result in the devices unable to properly load software upon initial setup." Only PlayBooks with 16 gigabytes of memory were affected, RIM said, and the majority of them had not yet been sold to customers.

Miramax has become the latest movie studio to make its movies available for streaming on Netflix's $8-a-month online subscription service. Starting in June, Netflix subscribers will be able to watch "several hundred" Miramax movies, the companies said Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed. Miramax's movies include Good Will Hunting,Kill Bill and Clerks.

Lowe's profit fell 6 percent to $461 million in the first quarter, as the bad weather that plagued much of the country kept customers away from their gardens and other outdoor projects. The nation's No. 2 home-improvement retailer also lowered its full-year outlook. "It's difficult to overcome Mother Nature when it comes to weather-related conditions," CEO Robert Niblock said.

U.S. home builders are concerned that the struggling housing market won't recover this year, and some feel it may be getting worse. Builders' outlook for the industry in May was unchanged at 16, where it has been for six of the past seven months, the National Association of Home Builders said Monday. Any reading below 50 indicates negative sentiment about the market. The index hasn't been above that level since April 2006.
