Cornyn: Still time for other Republicans to jump into Florida's U.S. Senate primary

Understatement of the year: "We kind of learned last year that it doesn't necessarily help to have the Senatorial Committee coming in and obviously recruiting a candidate or endorsing people in primaries," Sen. John Cornyn said this afternoon when asked for an update on the NRSC's plan for Florida's Republican U.S. Senate primary.

"But," he added, "we're going to continue to encourage good people to get involved. I remain convinced that the quality of the candidate still makes a big difference."

Perhaps another sign national Republicans and activists are unsatisfied with the candidates -- Adam Hasner, Mike Haridopolos and George LeMieux. Cornyn, who got into a flap over a plan to draw Joe Scarborough into the race, chose his words carefully. "The primary, if I'm not mistaken, is August of 2012. So it's still early and there's plenty of opportunity for people to get involved."

Should others jump in?

"I'm really am sort of ambivalent about that," Cornyn replied. "I'm not going to be the one making that choice; it's going to be the primary voters. I'm content to let it play itself out."
