Among the 28 seniors Newsome coach Kenneth Hiscock must replace this spring are two of the top players to wear a Wolves uniform. Conner Powers was the heart of the Wolves' Wing-T offense, rushing for more than 4,500 yards over his four varsity seasons, including a Hillsborough County-high 1,790 yards with 28 touchdowns. Add linebacker Joe Worth, a three-year starter who was the heart of Newsome's hard-nosed defense, and you have two players whose contributions and leadership simply can't be replaced. Right?
Not so fast. Hiscock didn't have to look far for adequate successors. He turned to their younger brothers.
Rising senior fullback Keller Powers (720 yards, 7.4 per carry) will take the majority of his departed brother's workload next season. And Hiscock has "big plans" for Will Worth (6-1, 207), last year's starting quarterback as well as a linebacker.
"That's one thing that's good," Hiscock said. "Those guys grew up watching their older brothers leading the team, so there's not going to be a letdown in leadership. You just kept going with a different face in there."
The Wolves return just three offensive starters - Worth, Powers and lineman Keith Weeks - and only two starters return on defense.
"We just want to play fundamental football," Hiscock said, "getting back to basics. We're back to teaching about getting in stances, blocking and running. It's basic football 101."
