CURRY, Mark W. Jr. 84, of Tampa and Highlands, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 16, 2011. Mark was born in St Petersburg and was a lifelong resident of Tampa, graduating from Hillsborough High School and WorshamSchool of Mortuary Science. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Baltimore during WWII. Mark was preceded in death by his son, Riley James, his much loved wife of 50 years Bertha Curry and the second love of his life, wife, Marti Dawes Curry. He is survived by his son, Mark Curry, III; daughters, Frances "Cissy" Ryan and Barbara Gelsomino, with her husband, Mark. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Brock, Alexandria and James, along with his siste,r Frances Vaughn and numerous nieces and nephews. Mark also leaves loving stepchildren, Charles Crispin and Cathy Keller, as well as his loving dog, "Pepper." He was the founder of Curry's Funeral Home, which was established in 1957. He was a member of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church, Palma Ceia Country Club and Wildcat Cliff Country Club in Highlands, NC. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Honor Patrol and the Royal Order of Jesters. Mark W. Curry Jr. was one of the most generous, humble and compassionate gentlemen that you could ever be fortunate enough to know. He was the best dad in the whole wide world and a shining example of a true "Southern Gentleman." A special thanks to his best friend Ron Shelton who was with him until the end. DONEGAN, Thomas Michael Sr., 72, of Brandon, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011. Mr. Donegan had been a local resident since 1972 after moving here from New York. KAPLAN, Ruth Gloria 88, died May 14, 2011. A native New Yorker, Mrs Kaplan worked for over 30 years as a General Services Manager for the U.S. Government. After her retirement in 1979, she and her husband Irving Kaplan moved to Port Richey. A member of the West Pasco County Chapter of Hadassah. Mrs Kaplan also volunteered for the Jewish Community Center and her local Social Security Office. She loved music, singing, dancing theatre, travel and old movies. KELLY, Joann "Ma" passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, while on vacation in Milton, VT at her son David and daughter-in-law Pam's home. Joann was born in Pittsburgh, PA on Sept. 25, 1929. She married Jack Kelly and they enjoyed a number of moves during their married life to NJ, TN, back to Pittsburgh and finally settled where they truly felt at home, Seven Springs. Besides Dave & Pam, Joann leaves behind her oldest son Dan; his wife Sharon; granddaughter Carly, husband Chris; great-grandson Colin; great-granddaughter (to be, due any day) Cayleigh Joann. Other members of that Kelly clan include grandsons Liam, Conor (fiancée Jameson), Trevor (fiancée Tina), and granddaughters Briana and Linda. Joann thought often of her friends in FL while in VT and had a special bond with Mary Duggan, Val & Gerry Farrar, Gladys Hadaway and Dora Cline. She enjoyed sharing her garden patch with her good neighbors the Hunts. She is also survived by her loving brothers and their spouses Uncle Bob and Aunt Irene and Uncle Tom and Aunt Kay. Joann was predeceased by her best friend and sister Molly. She was also predeceased by the man in her life, her beloved husband Jack. She also leaves behind numerous sisters in laws and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the VNA/Hospice staff that made Ma feel so comfortable during her stay in VT and allowed her to pass away with dignity. LONG, Henry Curtis Sr. Nov. 14, 1919 - Jan. 29, 2011 Henry Long was born in Atlanta, GA and grew up in St. Petersburg. He was a WWII veteran who served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. Mr. Long was predeceased by his siblings, William G. Long and Martha Long Dann and his daughter, Linda Lee Long. McDERMOTT, Dora Sumner "Dee" died in Tampa on May 15, 2011 at age 84. She was born Dora Bell Sumner in Mango, FL on April 30, 1927. In 1945, she met and married James A McDermott. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her husband, of 65 years, Jim; daughter, Denise Jerome of Sacramento, CA, daughter, Suzanne Brown and husband Bill Brown and son, Dennis McDermott of Tampa. Forever remembered for her loving support and quirky sense of humor by grandson, John Sivak and daughter, Kayla, grandson, Damian Sivak and daughter, Bronwyn, all of California, and granddaughter, Lacey Brown of Tampa, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. Her children appreciated that she was a full-time homemaker during their early years and she had a great love of life. During the 1950's and 1960's she provided water safety instruction to the handicapped as an American Red Cross volunteer. After entering the workforce, she retired after 15 years of service with Southern Life and Health Insurance Co. She was a member of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church, Rosemary and Flowering Tree Garden Circles, the Tin Lizzie Pit Crew and a life member of the Patrol Unit of the Daughters of the Nile Elim Temple No. 76. She and Jim had a goal to canoe every river in Florida and enjoyed trying to reach it. They loved traveling throughout the world. Dee was an avid bridge player to the end. He was an Industrial Electrician at Weirton Steel Company in Weirton, WV where he was a member of their all male chorus. He was a member of the Toronto Masonic Lodge #583 in Toronto, OH for over 50 years; Osiris Temple Shrine in Wheeling, WV, Royal Order Of Jesters and the Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of OH. He was born in Grosse Pointe, MI and moved to Orlando, and later to Marathon, where he lived for 40 years and recently moved to Homosassa. He was a commercial diver in tropical fish collecting and was a woodworking craftsman. RICHARDS, George Everts was born Dec. 10,1924 in Boston, MA to Wilfred and Eleanor Richards. He attended schools in Deerfield and Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood, NH. George entered WWII on July 2, 1943. He was a machine gunner for Headquarter Company 3rd Battalion, 507th PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division. He jumped behind the lines in Normandy and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge under the 17th Division. After his discharge on Jan. 5, 1946, he returned home to Northwood and married the love of his life, Leatitia Guptill on Dec. 10,1948. They raised three children Frank, William and Mark. Upon retirement , he moved to Port Richey, in 1994. He was involved in volunteer work at Bayonet Point Hospital for the past 12 years. George was an active member and volunteer at the neighborhood PalmTerrace Club. He loved to go dancing and bowling. George never met a stranger and was always there to help someone. He loved his wife, his family, life and people. He was a man of his word who worked hard to take care of his family. He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Leatitia Annie Guptill Richards; his three children, Frank Richards and his wife, Susan of Longview, TX, William Richards of Miami, Mark Richards of Somersworth, NH. He leaves behind six grand-children, Joseph and Paul of Longview, TX, Brian and Stephanie of Miami, Tracey Torba and her husband, Mike of Kodiak, AK and Zack Richards of Somersworth, NH, as well as two great-granddaughters, Violet and Rory. He is also survived by a brother, Edward Richards and his wife, Lorraine and numerous nieces and nephews. RIZZI, Joseph 87, of New Port Richey, died Monday, May 16, 2011. Joe was born in Detroit, MI on Feb. 1, 1924. He proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army during WWII and received 5 Bronze Stars. Joe retired from Millwright Local 1102 in Detroit Michigan in 1982 and moved to Florida where he was an avid bowler, joining the PBA Senior tour from 1987-1989. He is preceded in death by his wife Pearl. Survivors include four sons, James Rizzi (Kathy), Florida, Joseph Rizzi (Brenda), Anthony Rizzi and Howard Tomlinson (Karen), all of Michigan; a brother, Patrick Rizzi, Minnesota and a sister, Theresa Keller of Michigan; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. SMITH, Arnetta M. 86, of Inverness, and formerly of Clearwater passed away May 15, 2011 under the loving care of Hernando Pasco Hospice Care Center of Inverness. She was born in Pembroke Ontario and has been a resident of Florida for 56 years coming from Niagara Falls NY. During her working years she was employed as an inventory manager by Sears. Mrs Smith was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Clearwater and Inverness. She was an accomplished musician and was known to her family as "The Organ Grinder" because of her love of music. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Smith. Survivors include a son, David J. Smith (Carole) Cocoa Beach; daughter, Patricia S. Jefferson (Ron) Floral City; grandsons, Robert and Kevin Jefferson and great-grandson, Kevon Jefferson. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 19, 2011 at 11 am with Reverend Paul Zimmerman of the First Lutheran Church of Clearwater officiating. STRATTON, Joy Myra went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the age of 83. She was born on Sept. 15, 1927, in Cincinnati, OH and moved with her family to St. Petersburg, in 1961. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be truly missed by all that knew and loved her. Joy is survived by her husband of 63 years, Donald C.
