470 Pasco school employees laid off

By the end of the school day Thursday, 470 Pasco County school district employees had learned they won't have jobs in the fall. The biggest number - 249 - were on temporary contracts that carried no guarantee of reemployment. Of those on more permanent contracts, 55 work at the district level, 6 are assistant principals, 66 are teachers/instructional and 94 are school-related personnel. Employees who did not get notice on Thursday should have a job with the district, although some might have to take involuntary transfers to other schools or jobs.

Superintendent Heather Fiorentino sent a letter to all employees at the end of the day giving them the news. Read on for the text of her message.

"I know this has been a very difficult time for everyone. As you know, our Board has been forced to cut 513 allocations for the 2011-2012 school year. These cuts impacted all levels of employees including Instructional, SRPs, NNBs and Administration. Some of these reductions were absorbed through retirements and resignations. In total, the District laid off approximately 470 employees. This includes 249 employees that were on Temporary Service Contracts, approximately 66 Instructional employees, 94 SRP employees, 55 District Level Employees and 6 Assistant Principals. A breakdown of each position impacted by lay-offs is attached.

This is very sad for our entire school family and these employees will be sorely missed. If by the end of the day today you have not been notified that you are being laid off, the District believes we have a position for you. We are now beginning the involuntary transfer process and layoff recall processes in order to match the employees with the positions that are vacant. These processes are outlined in the employee contracts and may require many employees to be shifted into new positions or to new worksites. Your Principal or Director will be in contact with you if you are impacted by this process and will work with you over the next few weeks to give you information about your new placement. Once the involuntary transfer and lay-off recall processes are complete, the District may have job openings. If so, these will be posted as normal and on our website. All displaced employees will have the ability to apply for any available positions for which they qualify.

We recognize that during this period of transition, there are many questions. Please direct these questions through your immediate Supervisor to streamline this process and ensure that consistent information is provided in a timely manner. We have also provided a link on our District's webpage ( that offers information about resources that are available to assist employees in transition. In addition, any employee impacted by the Reduction in Force Process or Involuntary Transfer Process is eligible for two additional counseling appointments through the EAP program (even if you have reached your maximum limit for this year).

Our goal is to assist all employees in making smooth transitions, and I would to thank Lynne Webb and USEP for working with us during this difficult time as we all try to minimize the impact of these unfortunate circumstances. By working together and supporting one another, I am confident that we will continue to move forward as one team dedicated to helping all students reach their highest potential.
