Boca Ciega's Elijah McClendon has offer pulled from Middle Tennessee State

In August, Boca Ciega linebacker Elijah McClendon committed to Middle Tennessee State, becoming one of the Blue Raiders' first commitments of the 2012 class.

This week, Middle Tennessee State pulled McClendon's offer, days away from national signing day Feb. 1.

"It's a tough situation for Elijah because there's not a lot of time left," Boca Ciega coach Antez Brinson said. "Most schools have spots filled up already. But we're still working on a couple of things."

McClendon worked hard in the offseason to get noticed by colleges and even switched to safety to help his chances of getting a scholarship. He also had offers from Bethune Cookman and Western Michigan. After committing to the Blue Raiders in the summer, McClendon wrote this on his Facebook page:

"Now that I'm (in) with the Blue Raiders, it's time for me to focus on me and my senior season. Blessed to be able to even play the game of football let (alone) earn a scholarship to play for a Division I program."

Brinson said McClendon was supposed to visit Middle Tennessee last week, but the trip was pushed back to this coming weekend. On Monday, the coaches told him the offer was pulled in part because the school hired a new linebackers coach.

It is likely that McClendon will not sign Feb. 1. But Brinson said there are a few schools that are interested, including Tennessee-Martin.

"Hopefully everything works out for him," Brinson said.
