BARCA, James Joseph 67, of Pinellas Park, succumbed to cancer on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at Bayfront Medical Center. Born in New London, CT, He came here in 1947 with his parents Mariano and Angeline Curzio Barca. He retired as Manager of Administration Services and Emergency Management from the city of St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Department after 24 years of City service. He is a 1962 graduate of St. Petersburg High School and served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. Jim worked for IBM (NASA) on the Apollo/Saturn moon launches. He received a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering from The University of Central Florida in 1972 and later worked for Honeywell Corporation in St. Petersburg. He is listed in the Who's Who of Southeast and America. Jim was a member of the Pinellas County Genealogy Society. He enjoyed working with computers, photography and music. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Janet (Shields) Barca; a brother, Jack J. Barca of E. Falmouth, MA; and several nieces; nephews; and cousins. CHASE, Frederick Jr. 80, died on Jan. 3, 2012 in Waukegan, IL. He was the son of Virginia Gerould and Frederick Chase II. He attended Clearwater High School and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Dartmouth College, followed by service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from the U.F. law school, then practiced law for 37 years in New Port Richey, where he was a charter member of the Rotary Club. Fred was predeceased by one son, Nathan Chase. And Bill was a cherished friend to many. Bill had a heart of gold and was known for his kindness, compassion, style, sweet smile, and dry sense of humor. He was a wonderful husband, father and stepdad who inspired those around him as a mensch through his caring and unconditional love. Born Aug. 6, 1933, in Chicago, Bill graduated from U of Illinois and was a member of the ZBT fraternity, maintaining close friendship with his fraternity brothers throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Navy before starting a family and career in Chicago. Bill was highly respected in the home building profession for his dedication to quality and innovation as sales and marketing manager for Lexington Homes and Concord Homes. He was past president of the Greater Chicago Homebuilders Association and recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award. He and Sam retired to Florida in 1998, where they met many new friends. He devoted time and care to the Cafe of Life food bank in Bonita Springs and to The Literary Council of Collier County. He loved fishing, boating, playing golf and keeping up on current events. Guests at Bill and Sam's dinner parties learned to make their own drinks, as Bill was a master of the art of conversation and would forget his bartender duties. He loved everyone he met and was truly interested in their lives. He also inspired those around him with his dignity and courage. Even when facing debilitating ALS, he never complained and always stressed the "need to look forward and live life" and proved it by taking classes at local colleges to the very end. He is preceded in death by his father, Mitchell Lee Phelps and survived by his wife, Mary Kay Phelps; children, Megan M. Phelps, Abigail M. Phelps and Brian E. Phelps; mother, Kathleen A. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett Powers and two sisters, Avis Burnside and Desta Rozelle. Emery was born in Laurel, MD and grew up in Richmond, VA. He was a retired car dealer who made lasting friends. Emery and Elsie loved to travel, especially to places involving playing golf. He was always trying to perfect his left hand swing. He was a family man who loved driving North Carolina to enjoy the weather and scenery. Emery was a member of the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club and the Tampa Bay Antique Vehicle Association. PRESTON, Joan C. 75, widow of the late Leonard "Gene" Preston passed away Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 in Charleston, SC. She is survived by her two children and son-in-law, Michael Preston, Tonya Clayton and her husband Donny, her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. ROBERTSON, Martha "Karen" of Clearwater was pronounced dead Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Morton Plant Hospital surrounded by her family and friends. She was born in Harrisburg, AR April 15, 1950, and moved to South Bend, IN where she graduated from Riley High School in 1968, later moving to Florida where she attended The Brewster Adult Technical School of Tampa, earning her Degree in 1979. She was later employed by Park, Ossian, Barnaky & Park, P.A. for 22 years. Karen was an active member of the Abundant Life Ministries serving the Lord faithfully donating her time joyfully as an End-time Handmaiden delivering hope to many in Haiti. She also brought a message of hope to many persons in jails and Prisons over 18 years, a ministry she loved above all else. Karen also served the Lord at Calvary Ministry, Largo Road Prison and working with young offenders at the Juvenile Detention Center. Karen always carried a song in her heart of praise and served singing in the choir at the Abundant Life Ministries. She is survived by her brother Richard Hammons; sister Marsha Gootee; daughter Tangi Chialastri; son Lonny Wilson; grandchildren Ian Hammons, Anthony and Carisa Chialastri, Brent Wilson and Alexandra James; great-grandchildren, Anessa and Jadon Hammons. She was preceded in death by her mother Johnnie Parker; father Lester Hammons and sister Faye Bakke. ROMANOFF, John G. Jr. 68, of Norwell, MA and St. Petersburg, passed away on Jan. 20, 2012 surrounded by his loving family at Bayfront Medical Center. John graduated from the University of Rhode Island and worked as a Systems Analyst for IBM in Vermont. He was Town Selectman in Jericho, Vermont and active in community service for many years. He loved spending time with family and friends, enjoyed gardening, animals and international travel. John is survived by his devoted partner, John "Jack" MacInnis. He was the proud father of Tania Romanoff of Indonesia, Martina Connelly of Massachusetts, Nicola Wentworth of North Carolina, Maria Rand of Massachusetts and Mikhail Romanoff of Vermont; and loving grand-father of seven.
