SUSPENDED OVECHKIN TO SKIP ALL-STAR GAME

Times wires

ARLINGTON, Va. - Alex Ovechkin is skipping the NHL All-Star Game, a decision he announced a day after the league suspended him for three games.

"My heart is not there. I got suspended, so why (do) I have to go there?" the Capitals' captain and two-time league MVP said Tuesday. "I love the (All-Star) game. It's a great event. I love to be there."

But Ovechkin, suspended for launching himself to hit Pittsburgh defenseman Zbynek Michalek on Sunday, added: "I feel I'm not deserving to be there right now. If I'm suspended, I have to be suspended."

Capitals general manager George McPhee said he supported Ovechkin's decision.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement emailed by a league spokesman: "(While) Alex Ovechkin was still welcome to participate in this weekend's All Star festivities in Ottawa, we would not be insisting that he do so."

MORE ALL-STAR: Flyers forward Scott Hartnell was been added to the roster, replacing Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews, who went on injured reserve with a left wrist injury.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Mathieu Perreault got his first career hat trick, including the tie-breaking goal in the third period, to lead the host Capitals past the Bruins 5-3. Perreault's third goal came 7:18 into the third when he put in a rebound off Roman Hamrlik's shot. Tuukka Rask started for Boston in place of Tim Thomas, who a day earlier skipped a White House ceremony honoring the team's Stanley Cup last season. ... Clarke MacArthur's second goal of the game at 2:06 of overtime lifted visiting Toronto over the host Islanders 4-3, giving the Maple Leafs a sweep of a home-and-home series. ... Jason Pominvile and Nathan Gerbe scored in a shootout and Ryan Miller made 27 saves as the Sabres snapped a 12-game road losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Devils.
