Margaret Piniella, mother of former Rays manager Lou Piniella, died this week in Tampa at age 92. Margaret Piniella was considered the athlete of the family, credited with playing a key role in developing Lou's interest in sports, as well as his temper. She famously once ran onto the court during one of Lou's Jesuit High basketball games to argue with the referee. "Everyone says Lou takes after his mom," family friend Carmine Iavarone told ESPN in 2010. Margaret Piniella had been in failing health for several years; Lou left the Cubs in August 2010 to come home and help care for her. Online condolences can be sent at jgrfuneralhome.com.

His wife, Kristen's, response? "I can't really repeat what she said," Ream said. "But ... she wants the best for me. If she says tomorrow that she wants something, then I guess I'll have to give it to her."
