Whether your kitchen has a drop-in cook top or a full-sized commercial range, the exhaust hood above it is an important design element in the room. There are many decorative, out-of-the-box exhaust hoods available, but another great option is to have an exhaust hood surround custom made to match your kitchen cabinetry. In the case of the range hood, pictured, the beautiful wood cabinet has been trimmed out in panels, and decorative corbels were added to support a shelf that is integral to the cabinet design. This shelf has become home to a prized Italian platter, which creates a wonderful focal point for the semirustic design of this kitchen space. Flanking this hood with a pair of appropriate sconces also brings attention to this part of the room, and creates a real wow factor. Depending on how much of a focal point you want your range hood to become, you could consider painting the hood cabinet in a contrasting color to the rest of the cabinets, or wrapping it in an entirely different material, such as hammered metal, tile, Pecky Cypress, a textured wall-covering ... another place to let your imagination run free. Just remember that if you cook a lot, the range hood will tend to be exposed to moisture and grease. Consider cleanability when making your decision on the finish.
