FLECKS OF DRAMA AMID THE PREDICTABLE

District tournaments begin this week in gyms all over the state. For the most part, the week is just a formality for some county teams that have been leading their districts all season.

And then there is Class 5A, District 12.

Three teams - Lakewood, Boca Ciega and Bradenton Southeast - tied for first place in the district. Southeast earned the top seed because one of the tiebreakers was most district road wins. Lakewood is the second seed and Boca Ciega the third.

That's important because if Boca Ciega can get past Dunedin (which it should) it sets up a Boca Ciega vs. Lakewood semifinal on Wednesday at Lakewood. The winner moves on while the loser turns in their uniforms.

If Lakewood loses, that means last year's state champion is out before region even begins. If Boca Ciega loses, it snaps a 19-year streak of playing in a district final and the region tournament, third longest in state history.

"It should be interesting,'' Lakewood coach Necole Tunsil said. "You get these neighborhood rivalries and anything can happen.''

Oh, and Southeast has won 12 straight district championships. There is a lot at stake in this district.

While the other area tournaments lack the drama, they still matter to those playing.

Here's a breakdown:

8A-8

A four-team district that has Palm Harbor University and Sarasota Riverview written all over it. They were clearly the top teams in the district, and PHU may be the strongest team in the county this season. Plant and Durant probably await in the regions. Both are solid, so homecourt advantage will be important.

7A-10

Clearwater heads into the district tournament with momentum, despite losing to Boca Ciega in a PCAC challenge game Thursday. St. Petersburg looks to be the clear No. 2 in this district, even if it has slumped in January.

6A-10

Tarpon Springs is the only Pinellas team in the district, and the Spongers are the top seed. It is not the strongest district, so a Tarpon Springs vs. Mitchell final is the likely matchup. The Spongers were 7-1 in the district this year, but that lone loss was by one point to Mitchell.

6A-12

Not the strongest district, but there is a chance an area team can advance. Palmetto is the top seed, but Largo and Osceola are two and three. Expect regions to be much tougher on the two teams that survive.

2A-9

In this four-team district, Sarasota Christian is the clear favorite, having gone undefeated in league play. The question is who will earn the runnerup spot for region,Keswick or Canterbury?

3A-9

Honestly, it's a two-team race between Indian Rocks Christian and St. Petersburg Catholic. In fact, if the district final is anything different it would be a major upset. The battle here is for homecourt advantage in the region quarterfinals. SPC defeated IRC twice in the regular season, but the largest margin of victory was five points. Should be a spirited district final.
