HAPLESS OFFENSE DOOMS MAGIC AGAIN

Times wires

PHILADELPHIA - The Magic simply cannot break out of its offensive funk.

Or its losing streak.

With its offense inept once again, Orlando lost to the rapidly improving 76ers 74-69 on Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The Magic has lost four consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 14-21, 2010.

This game was not as close as the score indicated. Orlando trailed 68-49 with 3:19 left in regulation before a late comeback tightened the score.

Dwight Howard scored a team-high 17, but he, like most of his teammates, was not efficient. He went 6-for-17 from the field and 5-for-13 from the free-throw line and finished the game on the bench, with an expressionless look for much of the time.

"We're still a great basketball team, we're just going through a tough stretch. That's it," Howard said. "There's no need for us to complain or point the finger or for anybody to panic. We're going to be fine."

The Magic was missing its regular starting backcourt of Jameer Nelson and Jason Richardson because of injury, and no one stepped up. J.J. Redick went 3-for-13. Hedo Turkoglu was 1-for-9.

Ryan Anderson scored 14 on 6-of-13 shooting and added 20 rebounds for the Magic, which has failed to score at least 20 in 11 of its past 14 quarters, a streak that dates to the second half of a defeat Thursday to the Celtics.

"We have to address the issues at hand," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I don't know if it's fatigue. I just know we are not playing well. Clearly, we have some things to address on offense."

If there was a saving grace for Orlando, it was that Philadelphia has one of the best defenses in the NBA. The Sixers entered Monday allowing 87 points per game, the lowest average in the league, and 41.8 percent shooting, the third-lowest percentage.

The Sixers (15-6) have gotten off to their best start in nearly a decade by taking advantage of a soft schedule, but it gets tough from here. Orlando was the first opponent in a long run of games against winning teams that includes home games this week against the Bulls and Heat.
