Before you head to the beach this weekend, be sure to keep skin, hair and face looking gorgeous with this list of pre and post beach-beauty musts.
Prepare for any visit by dry brushing; a technique that exfoliates skin via the use of a dry, natural bristle brush. All the rage at spas, dry brushing at home is an easy way to shed dead skin cells and prep skin for self-tanner or spray tan.
For those who love a little color but don't want to expose skin to harmful UVA/UVB rays, a quick spray tan will have you looking like a beach beauty sans skin damage. Opt for an affordable booth spray tan (about $20 per session at Planet Beach) or opt for an at-home custom airbrush tan treatment, for $49 from Sun Kissed Tampa, a mobile airbrush tanning service.
Whatever beach prep you choose, be sure not to book laser hair-removal treatments or other similar laser treatments before hitting the beach as sun exposure must be minimized or avoided immediately post-laser.
Once at the beach, SPF in hand, it's essential to re-apply sunscreen generously and regularly, especially after swimming or physical activity. I adore powder sunscreens beachside because they're easy to apply and the powder base helps brush off sand. Sunforgettable Mineral Powder Brush SPF 30 by ColoreScience ($50 at DermStore.com) is a brush-on mineral sunscreen this is free of dyes, chemicals, colorants and odors. Not only does it protect skin from over exposure but, as a bonus, you can avoid that sandy re-application of liquid sunscreen by brushing on this skin-saving powder.
Hair needs help too, as the sun's harsh rays can fade hair color and weaken locks. Wearing a hat is a great way to protect tresses but there are also products that offer hair the same kind of protection you swear by for your skin. Ouidad's Sun Shield Sun & Sport Leave-In Spray ($20 at Sephora) protects hair from sun, wind, salt, and chlorine while UV filters seal in moisture and nourish strands.
Spend a weekend at the beach and, upon return, it's wise to invest in some postbeach grooming to re-hydrate hair and skin as well as maintain any glow you may have garnered. Hydration is key as the more sun and sand you're exposed to, the more likely your hair and body have lost some vital moisture.
Here are two favorite do-it-yourself hydrating treatments that call upon avocado, which is rich in healthy fats and fatty acids to treat dry skin as well as offering anti-aging benefits. Half of an avocado, a tablespoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar are all you need for an easy, affordable at home skin treatment. Simply peel and mash the avocado and then mix with olive oil and vinegar. Apply to face - and body, as needed - and leave the mask on for 20 minutes before removing with warm water. Hair in need of help, too? Take the rest of your avocado, peeled and mashed, and mix well with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Apply to hair, leave on for 30 minutes and then shampoo hair as usual.
You've officially mastered beauty at the beach.
