DEPUTIES: MAN BEAT SLEEPING WIFE WITH HAMMER

A 44-year-old man accused of trying to kill his wife with a hammer as she slept was arrested by the Lakeland Police Department on Wednesday.

Authorities gave this account of events:

Dawn Young, 33, woke up just before 4 a.m. Monday covered in blood. Her husband, Christopher Young, 44, was standing behind her.

He grabbed her cell phone, preventing her from calling for help, and fled.

Dawn Young then drove herself from her home at 1912 Sparkman Road to South Florida Baptist Hospital with multiple skull fractures.

She was transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa for treatment.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for Christopher Young's arrest on attempted murder charges.

Thursday, Young was arrested by the Lakeland Police Department and booked into Polk County Jail, where he remained Friday.

According to Hillsborough County detectives, Young, who is about 6-feet-7-inches tall and 220 pounds, admitted hitting his wife in the head with a hammer.

The couple have young children together, according to Bay News 9.

According to state records, this is Young's first arrest.

The investigation was continuing.
