A 16-year-old boy and 91-year-old woman died Friday night in a five-car accident on State Road 54, authorities said.
About 9:30 p.m., Matthew Capelo-Fine, 16, of Trinity was heading east in a 1997 BMW sedan, approaching Lake Polo Drive, when he lost control of his car and swerved. Skidding across the grassy median, he hit a westbound Hyundai Veracruz driven by 71-year-old Joseph Furphy of Holiday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Anna Furphy, 69, was in the front seat and three relatives were seated in the back.
Capelo-Fine's car kept spinning, hitting another vehicle - a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Port Richey resident Donald Watrous, 43 - and then another - a Nissan Altima driven by Keisha Squire, 22, of Holiday.
The PT Cruiser then spun and struck the Furphys' Hyundai. Squire suffered minor injuries.
A fifth car, a Chevy Impala driven by Jessica Cameron, 30, of New Port Richey, was struck in the windshield by debris.
Capelo-Fine died at the scene. Anna Davis, 91, a passenger in the Furphys' car, died later at Tampa General Hospital, where Joseph Furphy also was taken. He had serious injuries.
Anna Furphy and two other passengers in the car, Collene Carberry, 13, and Jilly Horaneck, 14, also went to the hospital. Furphy and Horaneck had serious injuries, while Carberry had minor injuries, authorities said.
A Boston native, Capelo-Fine moved with his family to Florida as a child, said his mother, Maria Capelo-Fine. He had a passion for hockey, which he played at J.W. Mitchell High School.
"He was just a normal young kid," Maria Capelo-Fine said. "He finally had a girlfriend. He was looking for a job. From what I've seen on his Facebook wall, he was well-loved."
He had two sisters, one 13 and the other about to turn 15, his mother said. "It's a sad, horrible situation," Capelo-Fine said.
The crash, which closed part of State Route 54 for three hours, remains under investigation.
