DARREY, John J. entered eternal life peacefully on June 21, 2012 at home with family just a few days short of his 94th birthday. He was known to all who met him as a kind man - enthusiastic, positive, energetic, smiling and optimistic. He was skilled as a carpenter craftsman. He was very innovative and resourceful. He was also, a man with unwavering steadfast faith in God. John was born in Ashland, WI in 1918 to John and Alice Darrey who preceded him in death as well as his five older sisters. He was a flight crew member in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Trude. He is survived by three sons, John "Mick" (Judie) Darrey, Jeff (Sharon) Darrey, Tim (Bridget) Darrey; two stepsons David (Sandi) Todd and Richard (Lori) Todd; daughter-in-law, Donna Darrey; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews. John was the founder of Darrey Construction Co. in 1947 in Racine, WI which he successfully operated for 27 years and was an independent building contractor for two decades in Clearwater. For the most recent ten years, he was employed by Publix at Neptune where he loved visiting and engaging with customers. There will be a Catholic funeral Mass for John celebrated by Fr. David Toups on Monday, June 25th at Christ the King Catholic Church at 2:30 pm. A visitation with friends will take place one hour before Mass. GAITHER, Jacqueline or "Jackie" Gaither 98, was a life- long resident of the Tampa and Lutz communities. She passed away June 18, 2012. Her grandfather, Robert F. Bettis moved to the Tampa area in 1894 and served as County Surveyor for Hillsborough County from 1903 to 1912 and from 1916 to 1920. Her mother, Emma Bettis and father, Walter F. Bettis were one of the founding families of Seminole Heights United Methodist Church. Jacqueline attended and graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1931 and was voted the best looking of her class. She attended and received a degree in Education from the University of Tampa in 1934. The University of Tampa was at that time housed at Hillsborough High School. Her first teaching position was at Seminole Elementary School. Many years later she earned a degree in Library Science and taught at Wilson Jr. High. Jacqueline married Mr. Vivian Gaither in 1937. Mr. Gaither (AKA as "Gaither or Prof") was a beloved principal of Hillsborough High School for 33 years. Jacqueline was by his side at most Hillsborough High School functions. She and Prof would continue their involvement with HHS and in 1984 a new high school was built and named Gaither High School in honor of Mr. Gaither's dedication to the Hillsborough County educational system. This was one of Jacqueline's proudest moments. Until her death, she continued to stay involved with both Hillsborough High School and Gaither High School. Jacqueline was also a moving force in the Tampa Federation of Garden Clubs for many years. She was a master Flower Judge and a master gardener. She held many positions in the Garden Clubs of Tampa. She was also active and on the Board of the Girl Scouts of America. Her interests and talents were many; she was certified in the art of rug hooking and millinery. Her love for nature and animals were well known throughout the community. She had found an injured Blue Jay and nursed it back to health and tried to release it but the Jay refused and became a part of the family. She was never without a dog or a cat. She helped coordinate and establish newspaper recycling back in the 1950s. In the late 1920s, Jacqueline posed as one of the Spanish women for the artist Mr. Harry Bierce in his famous murals at the Valencia Gardens Restaurant. Her historical knowledge of the Tampa area and her contributions to the community will be greatly missed. She truly loved Tampa. She was preceded in death by her Mother, Emma Bettis: Father, Walter F. Bettis; Husband, Vivian Gaither; Brothers, W.F. (Bill) Bettis and R.W. (Richard) Bettis. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Deannie Bettis of Arizona; Nieces: Susan Bettis Stagg (Eric), Mexico; Jean Bettis Swafford (David), Florida; Sharron Bettis Bird (Brad), Utah; Nephews: Dan Bettis (Danna Lee), California; Bill Bettis, Oregon. There will be a memorial service with a reception following on July 15, 2012 at 2:30 pm at Seminole Heights United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the care takers of Companion Care; Jerried Akins, Catherine Cope, Lisandra Martinez, Maudlin Young, Wendy Millaway, Buki Brooks, Tammy Allen, and Shanta Hayes. GORDON, Regine Marie 25, of Tampa, passed away on June 21, 2012. Known to her family and friends as Marie, she was a loving and devoted daughter and sister. Marie graduated from Duke University in 2008 with a BA in English and Literature, and went on to become a respected consultant and head of marketing at ExcelaCom, Inc. until the time of her death. Marie became a Tampa resident in 2009 and at the age of 23, a home owner in the Palma Ceia area. Marie's friends and family also knew her as an athlete, a writer, and an extraordinarily kind and caring soul with a mischievous sense of humor. A determined and powerful runner, she completed the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, with a time of 3 hours, 29 minutes, and 3 seconds. She competed successfully in dozens of other running events in Tampa Bay and beyond. She embraced adventure, traveling to Australia and Ireland as a student and to Europe with her family; snowboarding in Canada; becoming a certified scuba-diver in Hawaii and going deep-sea fishing in the Florida Keys. Marie became a writer at a young age. While growing up in Lake Mary, FL, she served as an editor of Lake Mary High School's student newspaper, The Rampage and contributed to the school's literary magazine, Essence. As an adult she published dozens of poems, short stories and essays on her website, Marie had a poem published in The Archive, a literary magazine at Duke. A devout Catholic, she worshipped at Sacred Heart Parish of Tampa. Marie will be remembered above all for how generously she shared her love, compassion, tenacity, intelligence, and laughter with her family and her friends. She is survived by her mother, Regine Zimmer Gordon; her father, Jeffrey Scott Gordon; her brothers, Jeffrey Scott Gordon II and David Benjamin Gordon; and her beloved German Shepherd, Hamlet. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 25th, from 3-8 pm, at Blount Curry MacDill Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 26th, 3 pm, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa. GRIFFIN, Nibia S. died June 22, 2012. A third generation Tampan, she was born to Felix and Aracelia (Chela) Santana on Aug. 9, 1921. After graduating from Hillsborough High School, she began work at the Exchange National Bank. She took a two decade leave from the job to marry Jack Griffin, the love of her life, and to raise her children. She returned to work, where she served for several years as a Bank officer. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and her sister, Onelia Lombardia. She is survived by her daughters, Marsha Griffin Rydberg (Thomas) and Pat Griffin (Thomas Noyes); grand-children Kristy Ayala (Wilson), Nancy Rydberg (Kevin Gibbons), Arthur and Emory Griffin-Noyes; and great- grandchildren Wilson and Griffin Ayala. LEVITT, Rose 92, the third child of Millie and Samuel Levitt, died peacefully in her sleep on June 22, 2012 at Palm Garden of Clearwater, where she has resided for almost a year. She had previously lived at Rosewood House II and Harbor Chase (Balmoral). Rose attended Newark University, now known as Rutgers. She like to draw using pencil, pen and pastels. She eventually left school to work for Harry Winston, the 5th Ave Jeweler, and remained there until her retirement. She is survived by her nephews, Ronald S. Levitt and his wife, Jill and their sons, Justin (wife, Cameron) and Brendon of Carlsbad, CA, also Alan M. Platteis and his wife, Teresa and their sons, Adam and Aaron of S. Windsor, CT, and by her niece, Susan Miller (husband, Tom). Rose doted on Susan's kids: Kerry, Danny, Kevin and Charlotte. Also survived by sister, Freda "Cookie" Ruth and her husband, Mike. Rose loved the musical programs and Bingo. She celebrated her 92nd birthday in April with the Bingo group, cupcakes and yellow roses. LOWE, Carol Ann 68, died peacefully June 22, 2012 surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 23, 1943 in Batavia, IL to John Paul and Carol Louise Johnson. Carol spent her childhood in Batavia IL, where she met and married Michael Lowe. Later she moved with her husband to Bethany, OK, Orange Park, & Coral Springs before finally settling in the Tarpon Springs area. Carol was a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her sons. Affectionately known as "Mimi", Carol was a loving mother of four and grandmother of seven. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her bridge group, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Michael Lowe; mother, Carol Louise Johnson; sisters, Paulette Johnson and Joan Hillier; brother, Peter Johnson; sons, and their spouses, Michael and Erin Lowe, Scott and Hong Qi Lowe, Timothy and Tracie Lowe, Jeffrey and Jessica Lowe; and seven grandchildren: Georgia Lee Lowe, John Paul Lowe, Ryan Elizabeth Lowe, Reese Caroline Lowe, Lillyann Ziqi Lowe, Gunderson Mackay Lowe and Jason Ming Lowe. ROBINSON, Willard A. 91 of Largo, died Friday June 22, 2012 at the Largo Medical Center. Born May 16, 1921 in Lawrence County, OH; he was the son of William and Cora Bellville Robinson. Willard married his wife the late Irene Saunders Dec. 13, 1941; she died Oct 27, 2011. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Willard was a Medical Aide for the Ohio State hospital and also had his own Dairy Farm in Bidwell OH. He moved to the Largo area in 1979.
