RAYMOND, Martha 91, passed away on Nov. 3, 2012, at Hospice House Bayfront, with her two daughters at her bedside. A long-time resident of St. Petersburg, she most recently lived at Menorah Manor. She was born and raised in Freeport, IL, and graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College at DeKalb. She spent her childhood and early adulthood, moving from Illinois to California to Hawaii and back to Illinois before finally settling, with her four children, in St. Petersburg in 1957. Having been abandoned by her husband, she was forced to bring up her children by herself at a time when it was very difficult for a woman alone to make a living. Luckily she had trained for one of the few professions open to women, teaching, which took her beyond Illinois, to California and Hawaii, and finally to St. Petersburg's Rio Vista Elementary, until she retired to be able to care for her ailing Mother. Later in her life, she worked as an activities aid at a nursing home, for 10 years, where she was able to give of her caring spirit once again. Martha was a lover of all creatures, kind and giving to all she knew and met, tolerant and patient, saw the good in everyone, and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. Her passions included painting watercolors, although she would say she wasn't very good at it, singing, playing the piano, and traveling: her favorite trip was a Unity Church tour of China with her son and daughter. She was an active member, and sang in the choir of First Unity Church for many years. Martha is survived by her children; Randy Raymond (Angela), Sylvia Raymond, and Holly Raymond (Phil); her loving grandchildren, Dustin Raymond (Kate), Desmond Raymond (Jessica), Dana Rawlins (Ben), Chloe Kessock, and Chloe Raymond; seven great-grandchildren; and predeceased by her son Bruce Raymond (Linda Moore). She was loved and will be missed by all of her family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Nov. 18, 2012, at 4:30 PM, at First Unity Church, 460 46th Ave N, St. Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, please send your contributions to World Wildlife Fund, or Habitat For Humanity, two of Martha's favorite charities.
