Just one day after TMZ broke their story about Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash being accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage boy, his accuser has taken back his claim. So, we guess things will be getting back to normal on Sesame Street, then.
The accuser's lawyers said in a statement that "he wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship. He will have no further comment on the matter." How anticlimactic. The New York Times says Clash is happy, releasing a statement saying, "I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest. I will not discuss it further."
Sesame Workshop, which put Clash on a leave of absence Monday after the allegations became widespread, did not say when Clash would return to his job. "We are pleased that this matter has been brought to a close, and we are happy that Kevin can move on from this unfortunate episode," the company said in a statement.
Allegations surfaced in June when the 24-year-old accuser went to Sesame Workshop and said Clash, who is now 52, started a relationship with him seven years ago, when the accuser was 16. Good thing TMZ splashed unproven allegations of underage gay sex by the puppeteer for one of the most beloved children's characters in modern times. And to think, Sesame Workshop first heard of it in June and demanded proof! The nerve!
