COLBURN, Alberta B. 98, of St. Pete Beach, was united with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Oct. 10, 2012. Born in Baltimore, MD, she was an East end correspondent for the Baltimore News and founded a childrens activities & sports club in Maryland. Upon moving to Florida, she co-founded the Widowed Persons Services of Pinellas County and PALS Social Club in 1982, of which she served as president. She was an award winning and published poet of Christian and inspiration works. Her greatest joys were her family and sharing the gospel message. She had a very successful 28 year career working as the Eastern Regional Administrative Assistant for the Paralyzed Veterans of America in St. Petersburg. DAVIS, LaVerne 92, beloved wife of the late Waldo Davis has gone to be with the Lord. She is survived by a son, Larry (LuAnn); a daughter, Lynne; her beloved sister, Ruth; 5 grandchildren, Yvonne, Ashley, Jason, Aaron and Sarah; several great-grandchildren and many more extended family members. Her beloved son, Richard and brother, Billy, a veteran of World War II, predeceased her. LaVerne was born and raised in Chicago, IL. After graduating from Business College she worked as a legal secretary until serving in the US Navy during World War II when she met her beloved husband of 55 years, Waldo Davis. She was a devout Christian, and a strong and independent woman. She was an extraordinary and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, wife, sister, homemaker, life coach, friend, neighbor, peacemaker and so much more. She was always young at heart, fun-loving and enthusiastic about life. She had a kind, caring, compassionate and gentle soul and will forever be loved and missed by all who knew her. ELSTON, Wanda Howard passed on Nov. 6, 2012. She was born in New Philiadelphia, OH, and came to St. Petersburg in 1937. She graduated from St. Petersburg High School in the class of 1940. Upon graduation, she joined Fenner & Beane Stock Exchange to become the first teletype operator responsible to transmit stock quotes from the New York Exchange to their southern offices. During WWII, she attended Business College in Washington, D.C., while working as a statistician in the Office of Price Administration. Returning to St. Petersburg, she worked for the Pinellas County Public School system in the guidance department of various schools throughout the county. Following her retirement, she became a realtor with Selby Real Estate. She was active in the St. Petersburg Pioneers, St. Petersburg Historical Society and Seminole UMC. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Elston; and daughter, Judy Houlihan. HACKWORTH, Michael Neil 57, passed Oct. 8, 2012, at Brookside Hospice Hospital. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Gordon and brother, Charles "Chuck". Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn; mother, "Marge" Hanke; brother, Tim; stepsister, Jody Clancy; nieces & nephews. In January 2001, Mike developed cancer of the liver as a result of Hepatitis C. Thanks to a Dr. David Borislow, he referred Mike to Lifelink of Florida where he received the gift of a new liver. In the spring of 2012, the Hepatitis C caused the cancer to invade the liver again. In Sept, Mike was in the care of Suncoast Hospice and had the joy of working with a wonderful nurse named Annie Ryan. Her goal was to keep Mike pain free and not to dwell on his dying. One day I asked Mike if he was angry that he knew he was dying and he said, "No Mom, I'm just so grateful for the extra 9 and a half years I had. HARMON, Edward Of Tampa and Cautauqua, NY. Beloved husband of Ellen; devoted father of Jon (Cindy), Amy Snodgrass (Jeff) and Jill Fairman (Frank), and loving grandfather to his nine grandchildren, died on Nov. 3, at age 86. Originally from New York City, Ed was a WWII veteran, a graduate of New York University and a Principal of P.S. 79 in Queens, NY. A renaissance man, Ed had a multitude of interests. An educational innovator, he also had a lifelong involvement in music both as a performer and aficionado. His keen sense of humor was clearly illustrated in his decades long work as a cartoonist. Ed published four books and his editorial cartoons were regularly featured in The Chautauqua Daily. All who knew Ed will miss him, each in a different and special way, for he touched all who were lucky enough to be his friend. MacKAY, Reverend Donald Mason 96, Methodist Minister of Lakeland - Reverend Donald Mackay died Nov. 2, 2012. He was born May 22, 1916, in Birmingham, AL, to the late Edward George Mackay & Beulah Mason Mackay. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Edward Hucheon Mackay, John Leland Mackay, and James Armstrong Mackay. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Anna Laura Mackay; his sister, Elizabeth Mackay Asbury; and five children, Laura Mackay Berglund, Lynn Ellen Mackay, Donald Mason Mackay Jr., Dr. Bruce Cole Mackay, & Dr. Edward George Mackay II. He has eleven grandchildren, Ryan Kent Berglund, Tracy Lynn Berglund, Jennifer Lauren Berglund, Justin Paul Mackay, Meghan Mackay Holgerson, Sarah Emily Mackay, Shannon Elise Mackay, Nathan Oliver Mackay, Edward George Mackay III, Whitney Cole Mackay, and Meredith Lynn Mackay. He has eight great-grandchildren, Elise Taylor Holgerson, Mason Bryan Holgerson, Collin Christian Holgerson, Daniel Knox Holgerson, Francis Rackliff Berglund, Robert Cox Berglund, Alysse Mackay, and Simon Martin Mackay. Rev. Mackay was a leader in promoting cooperation and harmony during the struggle for Civil Rights for all people. He was instrumental in integrating the Jacksonville Ministerial Association. He had a great spirit of adventure, loving to fish, boat, and explore the local rivers. He and his brother, Jaimie, navigated the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, GA, to St. Andrew's Bay. He graduated from Emory University and was an active member of the Emory Christian Association and a member of Kappa Alpha Order. Afterwards, he attended Duke Divinity School where he was student chaplain. In 1942, he joined the Navy as a chaplain training at William and Mary College before being assigned to the Pacific theater during World War II. He was assigned to the PT boats in that region. He returned from the war in 1946. He was the minister of the Bowling Green Methodist Church in Bowling Green, Ortega Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Grace Methodist Church in St. Augustine, Riverside United Methodist Church in Miami, Beach United Methodist Church in Jacksonville Beach, Cocoa United Methodist Church in Cocoa, Seminole United Methodist Church in Seminole, Beymer United Methodist Church in Winter Haven, and Case United Methodist Church in Delray. He then became the chaplain of Wesley Manor in Jacksonville for about ten years. Memorials may to be sent to one of his previous churches, call Rev. PARADY, Gertrude Margaret (Strople) Born Oct. 6, 1935 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, died Nov. 9, 2012 in Clearwater, FL. Father: William Strople; mother: Ellen (Maxwell) Strople. Gert was the fourth of five girls. Living sisters are Mary Strople of Rockport, MA, Ellen Nelson of Gloucester, MA, Catherine Walsh of Swampscot, MA, and Florence Pate of NH. Gertrude attended St. Ann's School in Gloucester, MA, graduating as 1953's Class Valedictorian. She became a Medical Laboratory Technician at the Boston Medical Dispensary. Later, she attended St. Petersburg Jr. College and the University of South Florida in Tampa, earning a B.A. in American Studies. On Oct. 2, 2012, Gertrude and her beloved James R. Parady celebrated 58 years of marriage. The couple and their family began their family in Rockport, MA, lived in Middle River, MD, Huntsville, AL, Clinton Township, MI and finally settled in Clearwater, FL in 1963. Gertrude and James' 10 children are Nancy A. Hunter of Scottsdale, AZ; James R. Parady, Jr. (deceased); Jean E. Rau (husband, Peter Rau) of Clearwater; William A. Parady (wife, Salome Zikakis) of Ft. Among her favorites were the Cape Ann Symphony in Gloucester, MA, the Mount Clemons Symphony in MI, the Clearwater Symphony, later the Sun Coast Symphony, the St. Petersburg Symphony and, most recently, the Tampa Bay Symphony for 25 years. STITZER, Lynnette Joan Anderson, 66, of St. Petersburg, passed away Nov. 11, 2012. She is survived by two brothers, Donald Douglas Anderson of East, CT & Marlin Arthur Anderson of Tampa; and two sisters, Judith May Anderson of St. Petersburg and Alexis Anderson Reed of Seattle, WA. Lynn was born Feb. 27, 1946 in Ross, CA to Donald Herbert and Alberta May Anderson. They lived in Houston, TX, in her father's hometown in Elbow Lake, MN, where the family owned an electric appliance business. She enjoyed tagging along with her siblings while they built snow forts in winter and explored the woods and fields in the summer. The family moved to St. Petersburg in 1955, where Lynn graduated from St. Petersburg High School. She was a good student and artistically talented. After graduation she moved to Richmond, VA, where she worked in a popular Chinese restaurant. She married Frank Stitzer, a Richmond native.
