Rubio backs McConnell for another leadership term

Sen. Marco Rubio today nominated Mitch McConnell for another term as Republican leader of the Senate.

"Mitch unifies all of us, regardless of philosophy or what part of the country we come from," Rubio said in a caucus meeting. "He's the smartest political mind around and a great listener. Above all else, what Mitch cares about is whether we succeed as a conference and as a country, and that's why I'm proud to nominate him for another term as leader."

Rubio made the nomination with Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, and McConnell got the nod. Texas Sen. John Cornyn was elected whip. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, was named chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, a job McConnell had asked Rubio to take. Rubio declined, citing the toll heavy travel would take on his family. (The ambitious senator would no doubt like to maintain his own agenda.)
