Author of Petraeus biography, All In: The Education of General David Petraeus. They met in 2006 when he gave a talk about counterinsurgency strategy at Harvard, where she was a grad student. Broadwell, 40, decided to write a Ph.D. dissertation on his leadership style and, once he took command in Afghanistan in the summer of 2010, asked if she could observe him in action. He agreed. Their affair began in November 2011 and ended in July, according to a Petraeus friend. Married to Scott Broadwell, a Charlotte, N.C.-area radiologist. They have two sons.

Tampa socialite, who befriended Petraeus and his wife when the general was the head of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, his last post before being sent to Afghanistan. She volunteers to help injured service members and their families at the Tampa base, where she also serves as something of a social coordinator/liaison for senior military leaders. Kelley, 37, began receiving harassing emails, sent anonymously, in May accusing her of inappropriate flirting with Petraeus. Concerned about the tone of the threatening messages, she sought help from a friend in the FBI. The investigation of those emails eventually led to the discovery of the Petraeus-Broadwell affair and of emails between Kelley and Gen. John R. Allen.Married to Dr. Scott Kelley, a cancer surgeon who worked at Moffitt Cancer Center before moving to the Watson Clinic in Lakeland in June 2008. They have three children.

The Wall Street Journal reports he was removed from the FBI case this summer after his superiors grew concerned that he had become obsessed with the matter. Khawamsubmitted letters from Petraeus and Allen, written in late September, in her appeal of a court decision that awarded sole custody of her young son to her ex-husband, Grayson Wolfe. Among the reasons cited by the judge for denying Khawam custody: "profound concerns about Ms. Khawam's poor logical thinking and her extreme distortions" and "severe psychological deficits."

The Washington Post quotes a senior U.S. official as saying Allen and Kelley exchanged a few hundred emails over a couple of years. The official strongly denies Allen and Kelley had an affair or engaged in inappropriate communication, the Post says. Married to Kathyand has two grown daughters.
