Safety Harbor Kiwanis recently honored Juan Torres-Cruz, a fifth-grader at the Safety Harbor Elementary, as October Student of the Month.

Teacher Mary Laventure chose Torres-Cruz for his respect, responsibility and readiness to learn. An excellent student who is always inquisitive and eager to learn, he always carries a genuine smile, sharing with everyone, according to his teachers.

The student's family and teachers were present as the fifth-grader accepted his trophy from Safety Harbor Kiwanis president Pam Corbino.

At the 114th annual convention of the Grand Lodge Daughters of Scotia held recently in Orlando, Joyce Marsden, a Clearwater resident and member of Daughters of Scotia, Susan Blair Lodge 255 in Dunedin, was installed as grand chief daughter. Duties during her one-year term include traveling to each of the 37 Daughters of Scotia Lodges throughout the country.

The Daughters of Scotia is a fraternal organization whose members meet in fellowship to preserve Scottish culture and heritage.

Susan Blair Lodge 255 was instituted Nov. 30, 1968. Members meet at the Scottish American Society Hall in Dunedin.
