NEW PRINCIPAL APPOINTED FOR RIDGEWOOD HIGH

TRINITY

Angie Murphy, an assistant principal at Mitchell High School since 2009, has been appointed to take over the principal's job at Ridgewood High. The Ridgewood position became vacant after its leader, Andy Frelick, was transferred to run Zephyrhills High upon the resignation of Steve Van Gorden, who faced sexual harassment allegations. Murphy, 33, recently participated in the district's principal pool academy. She oversaw the district's secondary education curriculum before moving to Mitchell. "Angie has demonstrated and been an example of an accomplished leader," said assistant superintendent John Mann, who ran the principal academy. "Her knowledge of curriculum is excellent ... and of how to move instruction forward. ... She is really good." She has a potentially tough job at Ridgewood, which has shown academic improvement since landing on the state's lowest performing schools list a couple of years ago. Ridgewood has raised its state grade from D to B, but remains on the district's "Assist" program. Murphy's appointment goes to the School Board for approval on Tuesday.

Program to pay for adding jobs

A partnership with Pasco County will now reward businesses bringing new jobs into the city limits financially. City Council members gave final approval Tuesday to implementing a program that pays qualifying businesses up to $5,000 for each new job that pays at least $36,319. The county already offers the incentive and until now, businesses that set up shop in a Pasco municipality would only qualify for half the amount. Now, the county still pays 50 percent but the city will make up the other half, up to $25,000. The city also can opt out on a case-by-case basis. "This will be a good tool to sell the industrial area around the airport," said City Manager Jim Drumm.
