STATE PAVINGTHE WAY FORPLANT EXPANSION

PLANT CITY

A state economic development grant is coming to help out Highland Packaging Solutions, which recently moved to Plant City.

The state has approved a $726,000 grant to widen about a quarter mile of Gordon Food Service Drive near Park Road.

City Manager Greg Horwedel said the grant is tied to Highland's move this year from Polk County, but will benefit other companies along Gordon Food Service Drive, including food packager GFS.

Highland is renovating a warehouse and installing equipment at the end of Gordon Food Service Drive, work that might be wrapped up this month.

The city still has to figure out a construction timetable. Horwedel said road work could start as early as December. The monthlong project would add a center lane to the two-lane highway to help trucks make left turns onto Park.
