They had seen firsthand the sadness of watching senior players walk off their home field for the final time with the scoreboard reflecting a loss. So the Florida Gators 2012 senior class decided to take matters into their own hands to ensure their fate would be different.
The No. 7 Gators (10-1) earned a 23-0 win over Jacksonville State (6-5) Saturday afternoon at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium with every point scored by a senior: an interception returned for a touchdown by linebacker Jon Bostic, a touchdown by running back Mike Gillislee and three field goals and two extra points from kicker Caleb Sturgis. Gillislee also had 20 carries for 122 yards and needs just 36 yards to hit 1,000 for this season.
"I want to thank the seniors and the job they've done at the University of Florida,'' coach Will Muschamp said. "I really appreciate them, going through a coaching change, going through a 7-6 campaign, questioning a rookie coach and his staff, and where we were headed with the program. They certainly could have walked the plank on us, but never did.
They left Florida Field having kept a promise they made to each other at the end of last season – to go undefeated at home and get Florida back on the right track.
