Male Hot Shot

Joey Ivie, Pasco

Sport: Football

Skinny: The 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive lineman broke out with strong performances in last year's playoffs. He put on another show Friday night. The Florida commit racked up 41/2 sacks and terrorized Citra North Marion to lead Pasco to a 34-10 victory in the Class 5A region quarterfinals. Ivie led a defense that didn't allow a touchdown until the game's closing minutes, held the Colts under 200 total yards and tallied five sacks in the fourth quarter to keep the game out of reach. Ivie also forced a fumble in the final quarter, setting up another Pirate score and helping Pasco reach the second round of the playoffs a third consecutive season.

Female Hot Shot

Kayla Kivinski, Gulf

Sport: Basketball

Skinny: With a first-year coach (Clare Ennis) and the loss of two standout transfers, Gulf figured to be in for a slow start to the season. Kivinski made sure that didn't happen. The junior wing set a career high by scoring 37 of her team's 46 points to lead the Buccaneers to a season-opening 46-40 win over Mitchell. Kivinski, last year's North Suncoast player of the year and a first-team all-Suncoast selection, filled the box score in other ways, too. She chipped in 10 rebounds, five steals, three blocks and made 17 of her 20 free throws. "Definitely Hot Shot of the Week," Ennis said.
