While Berkeley Prep's boys and girls track teams were out of the running for the team titles in the event the school hosted last week, both squads had winning individual performances in the Class 2A, District 9 meet.

Addi Harden took first place in the discus and shot put. Her 117-foot, 10.5-inch discus throw and 35-foot, 8-inch shot put toss earned her a trip to the region track meet.

The Berkeley girls placed second behind Academy of Holy Names, which outpaced the Buccaneers 217.5 to 102.5.

On the boys side, Berkeley's Max Borland took first in the 3,200 meters and second in the 1,600 meters. Borland's winning time in the 3,200 was 10:04.7. His 1,600-meter finish was 4:34.71.

In the Class 1A, District 8 meet, Cambridge Christian had three athletes qualify for the region meet while Carrollwood Day School also had multiple athletes qualify.

Cambridge senior sprinter Taylor Mitchell won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.88 seconds and placed fourth in the 200-meter event. His teammate, Luke Steinle took the district title in the 110 hurdles at 16.56 seconds. On the girls side, Madison Cox won the 200 meters (25.87 seconds) and placed second in the 100 (12.46).

Meanwhile, Carrollwood Day's Elias Earley won the boys 200-meter crown with a 22.97-second time while seventh-grader Kailiece Harris won the girls 400 (59.27) and placed fourth in the 200 (26.50).

Regional track and field meets are taking places at multiple statewide locations this week.

A no-hitter for Alonso's Faedo

Alonso celebrated its last regular season home game in style April 12 with a 10-0 win against Chamberlain, highlighted by Alex Faedo's five-inning no-hitter.

A junior, Faedo struck out eight and walked one as the Ravens (13-8) cruised to the victory.

Faedo got plenty of run support, mainly from Andrew Abbott, who hit a grand slam, and Napo Ballestero, who collected two RBIs on two doubles.

Alonso plays at Gaither tonight before the district tournament begins Monday at Bloomingdale.

CDS girls tennis heads to state

For the second straight year, Carrollwood Day School's girls reached the state tennis tournament.

Led by No. 1 singles player Jackie Fitz-Randolph, who won a hard-fought region final against Tampa Prep's Paige Leavy, the Patriots won four of five singles matches to take the team region crown.

Fitz-Randolph, who also faced rival Leavy in the district finals match, defeated her again 7-5, 6-3. Lauren Fitz-Randolph, Sarah Yaffe and Casey Brynjolfsson also won singles matches for CDS.

On the boys side, CDS's Eric Fitz-Randolph advanced as an individual player. In the Class 4A regionals, Wharton's boys were swept 4-0 by Wiregrass Ranch.

Two announce college choices

Freedom defensive back Zach Romp has committed to Division III Berry College.

Romp, a 5-foot-9, 166-pound defender, had 37 tackles and two interceptions last season as a senior for the 3-7 Patriots.

Berry, just northwest of Atlanta, has a new football program and will field its inaugural squad in the fall of 2013.

Meanwhile, Leto placekicker Amoreto Curraj has signed a "letter of commitment" with Marshall.

The arrangement allows for Curraj to compete for the Division I Thundering Herd's starting kicking position. If he does not earn the starting job, he can still earn a scholarship by January.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Curraj kicked three field goals for the winless Falcons last season and also handled the punting. He has spent time at statewide kicking combines since his senior football season ended.
