CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Take advantage: Just about everything is biting right now, so take this opportunity to fish as often as possible before the daily thunderstorms and oppressive heat of summer arrives. Many species are cooperating now, including large spotted seatrout, mackerel, cobia and even mangrove snapper.

Mackerel: Huge schools of Spanish and king mackerel have arrived in our area and are ready to create havoc on just about any bait. The Spanish mackerel are especially thick this year.

Tip: When fishing for mackerel, remember that their teeth are razor-sharp and plan accordingly, so bring extra hooks. Just as important, use caution when moving these fish to the cooler. I've had more than one take a chunk out of me.

Future: The quality of fishing will continue to improve rapidly. The next several weeks are truly the best time of the year for fishing in our part of the world.
