Car hits bus; two people hurt

Two people were injured Thursday morning after a car swerved into the path of a Pasco County school bus.

A Toyota driven by Christine Hughes, 46, of Aripeka, was headed north on Softwind Lane, south of Shady Hills Road. At 8:35 a.m., the car drove over the center line in front of the school bus driven by Lisa Butterfield, 47, of Hudson, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

No children were on the bus.

Butterfield tried to steer out of the way, the report states, but the Toyota's front left end slammed into the bus' front left, causing the Toyota to spin and finally stop facing south on the northbound shoulder. The bus ended up on the southbound shoulder, facing south.

Hughes and her 13-year-old daughter, Taylor Galvin, were treated for minor injuries at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Butterfield was not injured. The crash caused $15,000 damage to the bus. Everyone was wearing seat belts.

FHP is investigating to determine whether anyone will be cited.

Home destroyed in fire; no injuries

Fire destroyed a house at 4251 Dristol Ave. on Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters received a call about 2:20 p.m. and arrived minutes later to find flames engulfing the rear of the Florida-style ranch home at Dristol Avenue and St. Augustine Road, said Spring Hill Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Kevin Carroll.

Within moments, flames were shooting from a skylight.

"It was definitely up in the attic for a while," Carroll said.

The source of the blaze was not immediately clear, and the fire marshal was investigating, Carroll said.

It was also unclear if anyone was home at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Property records show the house is owned by Joseph and Barbara Berrios and is valued at $33,160 due to confirmed sinkhole activity.
