Archaic Interest

St. Pete's Archaic Interest formed in January 2012, but over the past year, they've already released a four-song EP and a seven-song demo album, with a single (Oceans of Opportunity) in between. Describing their music as "dream surf," the group - Jeff Williams, Dylan Martin and Ben Saylor - play noirish, reverb-heavy surf rock that could be the soundtrack to a California drug trip. facebook.com/archaicinterest.

In December, Clearwater native Costabile organized One Single Wish, a holiday album benefitting the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. It was a delightful departure from his usual ambient music, which is eerie yet poetic. onesinglewish2012.tumblr.com.

The Laurel Canyon

Shawn Kyle's other band these days is the Laurel Canyon, whose sound bears little resemblance to the sunny California pop movement of the '70s. Jesse Thelonious Vance is a champion of the Florida noise scene. If he isn't busy setting up a festival (like the Pangaea Project), or working on his record label, he's sure to be found performing, collaborating or recording with one of his countless music projects, which range in style from danceable to (depending on your tolerance for noise) borderline unlistenable. His musical output has included Great White Duck (nu-jazz jam-funk band), DC9V (his solo project) and collaborations with Miami's minimalist synth-goddess Jackie Ransom. pangaearecords.bandcamp.com.
