Is high school too early to worry about heart health? Not at all, according to screenings conducted last school year in Hillsborough.
In 2011, 600 students consented to the free, grant-funded screenings at All Children's Hospital for an academic study. The results, published in March in the journal Pediatr Cardiol, weren't good: Fourteen percent had borderline or abnormal electro-cardiograms. Most showed no symptoms of heart trouble. Two indicated a potential for sudden cardiac death. Twenty-five percent were overweight or obese.
